Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga desert tour 3 days – itinerary:

1st day: Ouarzazate – M’hamid

Departure in the morning at 08:30 from your hotel, and you venture south on your 3-day desert tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga. You travel south over the Anti-Atlas Mountains as far as Agdz, a oasis town well-known for the variety of palm dates. As you start to descend the Tizi-n-Tinfifite pass (1660m), you will be amazed by the splendid views of the extensive green oases and the innumerable palm trees, all indicating the beginning of the Dra’a Valley.

Agdz is part of the ancient Caravan Road which used to supply goods up from Mali and Niger, having crossed the Sahara. Nowadays, its abundant palm groves produce an impressive 44 varieties of dates.

For a short while, we go off-road through the Dra’a Valley, between the mountains and the river, passing through many villages to gain a better idea of the way of life along the oases. You will stop to visit Kasbah Tamnougalte, the oldest Kasbah in the valley. Some parts of the Kasbah are still inhabited, while others, particularly the Jewish quarter, are now crumbling, having been abandoned.

From here, you continue your 3-day Erg Chegaga desert trip from Ouarzazate, travelling south alongside the ancient Caravans road as far as Zagora, the last largest oasis in the valley and the venue for today’s lunch. Just outside of Zagora, you visit the local green pottery co-operatives and an old Quranic library in Tamgroute village.

In the afternoon, your desert adventure continues further south as far as M’hamid, where the sand alongside the road signifies the beginning of the mighty Sahara Desert. M’hamid village is the gate to the Sahara and the end of the paved road.

Here a camel ride leads to the summit of the dunes to enjoy an unforgettable sunset. You have dinner and spend the night in a luxury desert camp in your own private tent equipped with a toilet & shower, king-sized beds, mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets, carpets & lamps.

2nd day: M’hamid – Erg Chegaga dunes

Get up early to witness the sunrise from the top of the dunes with free time to wander the desert dunes, and immerse yourself in moments of utter tranquillity. Back at the camp, breakfast is served and you set out on your adventure to explore the region.

The old villages here are typical of desert dwellings, where houses are constructed entirely of adobe. This excellent building material keeps out the summer’s searing heat due to the walls’ thickness. You will explore these villages and learn about life in this harsh yet equally beautiful environment.

After lunch, you continue to Erg Chegaga dunes with about 65km of off-road driving through the varying features of the Sahara Desert; ‘erg’ (dunes), ‘hammada’ (stony desert) and oases.

At the campsite, you check in to your tent and enjoy a relaxing glass of tea and Moroccan biscuits. Then, you take a camel ride to watch to summit of the Erg Chegaga dunes, which stand at a remarkable 300 meters in height, offering stunning sunsets. These dunes are far away from civilization, and the silence and the expanse of the sand are overwhelming.

Back at the camp, dinner is served, followed by an evening of nomad music and drumming around a campfire. You spend the night in your private tent, equipped with a private toilet & shower, king-sized beds, mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets & carpets, lamps and beautiful Moroccan furnishings, all tastefully arranged to enhance your stay.

3rd day: Erg Chegaga dunes – Ouarzazate

If you get up early enough, you will be rewarded by an incredible sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an incredible sight. You will also have time to wonder about the dunes and experience the tranquillity of this magical place.

Back at the camp, breakfast is served. Then, your 3-day Erg Chegaga desert tour from Ouarzazate continues through another 90km of the Sahara Desert with varying scenery: Lake Iriqui, where you are likely to experience a vast mirage in the heat, the mountains, with the opportunity to look for fossils.

You travel west from here, following the old track of “Rally Paris-Dakar” as far as Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert and the venue for lunch. From here, you drive north along paved roads and past fantastic rock formations to the small town of Taznakht, famous for its Berber carpets and rugs. If interested, you can visit a display room with looms and women at work.

Turning back east, you arrive in Ouarzazate by the end of the afternoon. Your driver will transfer you to your hotel which marks the end of your 3-day desert tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chegaga.

Best Tour Service - Kasbahs, Gorges, Merzouga Tour from Ouarzazate We just came back from the 3 Days tour of Kasbahs, Gorges, Merzouga Desert from Ouarzazate and everything about the tour from beginning to end was amazing. Massive thanks to Hamzah, Lhossine and Lahcen. The booking process was very simple, with really quick correspondence over email and once we arrived at Ouarzazate they confirmed the time the driver (Lhossine) would pick us up from our Riad to start our tour. Once on the tour, everything was very well organised - from the visits to the kasbahs and other attractions, lunch, dinner and even down to the rest stops in between. Lhossine even showed us some things that werent originally in the itinerary but thought we might be interested in such as taking us to an ex-nomad family making berber rugs and stopping by the side of the road to see the dinosaur footprint. The tour was also very well paced, we never felt rush at any time and the stops were well spaces so that you're never in the car for too long. The restaurants and the hotels were also of very high standards not only in terms of accommodation but also the food were one of the best we've had in Morocco and the berber music performance was so much fun. I also want to add that after our tour, we stayed a bit longer in Ourzazate and unfortunately one of our plans fell through. I didnt know what else to do and last minute I messaged Hamzah to see if he can help us and he was so kind and helpful. He organised a driver last minute to take us around (and at a very reasonable cost). So I had another half day tour with Lahcen to see Ait Ben Haddou and visit Studio Atlas and again, they really took their time to organise an itinerary / drive that maximised what we could see by going off road to see some of the film sets outside of the studio and Lahcen also acted as a guide walking around Ait Ben Haddou. This was my first visit to Morocco and it definitely made a lasting impression and a lot of it was due to Hamzah and his team at Moments in Morocco. Thank you Hamzan, Lhossine and Lahcen. If we're ever back in Morocco we will definitely be in touch!
Great desert trip! We booked a three day desert trip to M’Hamid and Chegaga. The two deserts we visited were beautfiul and everything around the trip was well-organized. We had a private driver who did a great job as well
6 star service We traveled with moments in Morocco in September 2023 . If we could give 6 stars to this company we would We did a three day desert tour from ouarazate From the email that we sent when planning our trip we knew straight away that this company was a very good company with email returned to us answering our questions very promptly We were in ouarazate the night of the earthquake which was very scary.Hamza contacted us not long after the quake which was at 11.30 at night to check in and make sure we were ok and safe and if we needed anything to contact him my wife and I thought how kind this was of him Now we also had an amazing driver for three days Momo amdyaze Moments in morocco were amazing to deal with but our drive Momo made the whole trip the experience that we were hopping for From the first moment to the end of the tour Momo offered a service of very high standards Momo spent a lot of time chatting to us as we drove along explaining lots of different things about the places we were going to and about the Moroccan culture . By the end of our tour we were sad to say goodbye as he had become a good mate The places that were selected for our overnight stays and our meals were also of a very high standard but did also pay a little extra to upgrade which I believe was worth every cent This trip was part of my 60th birthday celebration and moments in Morocco even went to the effort to surprise me with a birthday cake in the middle of the desert now that was pretty cool Again thank you moments in Morocco for the best experience we could of asked for and to momo amdyaze for being the most amazing tour guid

Desert adventure It was a very pleasant time to be taken to the desert and experience the unique moments in the sahara, riding camels and in the camp. Our driver was nice and considerate, the meals, transportation and hotels were included which made it all go smoothly. Consider that the meals include only the food and in many stops you will need to take cash for some expenses. While we were told we were going to be given water, many times it was kind of confusing when would that happen. So consider asking beforehand what is included in the meals and what not. We took the 3 day trip and the stops were very nice, we wish we had a little more time at the desert, so I would advice to ask the agency or driver for that or to take the 4 day trip instead if you want to . Overall it was a once in a lifetime experience, me and my friends enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who visits morocco for a few days and want to be in the desert adventure as well.

2 day desert tour from Ouarzazate We had an incredible experience! Over the course of three days, we were fortunate to have an excellent tour guide who was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable. Our stops for meals and rest were consistently at secure locations, where the food was consistently delightful. Our guide also provided excellent food suggestions. The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the Sahara Desert, and our camp there was truly remarkable. The tents were impeccably clean.
Great tour to Dades Valley Had an amazing day trip to the Dades Valley. With lots of places to see along the way and opportunities to stop at places of interest. Driver was a great tour guide, in a comfortable car with AC and the ability to go off-road. The lunch included is delicious with an amazing view. Would highly recommend this tour.
